F.R.I.E.N.D.S, the American 90’s sitcom is 25 years old but yet remains wildly popular with young viewers and keeps defining friendship even in 2020. It’s rather a relief for many to see this show defining friendship till now. Probably, because we need that kind of friendship no matter how wrapped up we are with the harsh world and busy lives.
This forever-gold sitcom follows the lives of six 20-something friends as they navigate the pitfalls of work, life, and love in the 1990s Manhattan. Since the time Friends’ reunion was announced, the fans have been going crazy on social media more than ever about the ’90s favorite.
No matter what generation the viewer is a part of, chances are they can see themselves in one or more of the characters. Whether you’re charming like Joey, sarcastic like Chandler, intellectual like Ross, neurotic like Monica, quirky like Phoebe or spontaneous like Rachel—there is a “friend“ in everyone; and sometimes two or three. That’s the key reason it remains so popular.
Every person regardless of age or generation comes to feel the bond of friendship portrayed in the sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S at one time or another. When you’re young and life is just starting to throw it’s googly one by one, you need your gang who could be your support system, who could be with you through thick and thin.
In F.R.I.E.N.D.S, seeing Ross, Rachel, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, and Chandler get through the tough moments in life encourages us to fight back and stay strong no matter what.
Whenever I watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S, it always makes me giggle no matter how miserable I feel. It’s encouraging, comforting, and soothing – like a “bubble bath” for the soul. The show goes beyond the standard sitcom measure as it presented some era-defining attributes.
F.R.I.E.N.D.S aired the first-ever LGBTQ ceremony shown on TV. The show unraveled the important discussions around infertility, sexuality, parenthood, individuality.
Moreover, F.R.I.E.N.D.S challenged women to be their own ‘wind-keepers’. In so many ways it strikes us on such emotional levels and I genuinely believe that we can learn some lessons, even after the century is over. That’s why so many people re-watch it over, and over again and we want to be a part of the Central Perk gang, even now, after all this time.
Today in 2020, as we are stuck in our busy lifestyle, it’s time to take time out from busy schedules to celebrate friendship in our lives.
